Computer Engineering Student
My name is Robert Thomas and I am a student in computer engineering at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte. I hold a career certificate for Digital Media Technology and am a Toastmasters Award recipient. Some of my favorite hobbies are reading, making music, and studying french. I especially prefer non-fiction memoirs and my instrument of choice is the guitar but I’ve also played a bit of piano. I chose computer engineering because I am passionate about technology and science and hope I can someday help develop new hardware components.

A Little About Me

Charlotte, North Carolina

I grew up here in Charlotte and hope that I can remain here to work because North Carolina is my home. From the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Outer Banks, NC beats out about every other state I've been to (out of 44). Did you know North Carolina is home to the Venus Flytrap and the only region they grow natively?

Why I Chose Computer Engineering

I have hands-on experience setting up personal computers and various computer equipment, such as printers, accessories, keyboards, mice, monitors, and videoconferencing tools. Additionally, I have assembled my own custom PC, making decisions about the selection of components like the processor, power supply, cooler, motherboard, and other modules.

In my work as the training director at Chick-fil-A, I have gained expertise in troubleshooting iPads, payment terminals, and Windows-based point-of-sale registers. During my employment at First Baptist Church, I assisted in using iMac computers to control lights, sound, and video during performances and convocational messages.

I am proficient in both Windows and Mac operating systems, as well as iOS/iPadOS, Android, and Linux/Unix systems. I have also worked with virtual machines, web servers, and my Raspberry Pi for various personal projects including hosting the website you see now!

Seeing a computer you assembled or repaired boot after hours of hard work is a magical feeling. The sense of accomplishment is something I wish to chase for the rest of my life. That’s why I chose Computer Engineering despite struggling with math and science in high school. Knowing my studies will help me to pursue my passion has motivated me to chase harder classes and topics instead of shying away from them, and after hard work, I’ve managed to not only pass my math and science classes but I’ve also done quite well in each of them. Wish me luck with Data Structures and Algorithms!

Arduino and Raspberry Pi

For personal projects I enjoy working with hardware like Arduino-based chips and Raspberry Pi's because they are simple to use and understand while also very powerful and have practical applications.

Working with Raspberry Pi has given the opportunty to learn how to use the linux command line and tools within it. By coding and hosting this website myself I also learned how to use VSCode's remote explorer and ssh tools.
It's also given me the chance to learn a more about webhosting, HTML, CSS, and Javascript, domain name registration, and ACME certification.

Arduino boards are the most fun for me. I've enjoyed getting to learn more about them and how they work and making small projects with them. I recently made a binary counter with an Arduino board and am looking forward to finishing up an automated irrigation system for my indoor garden!

Digital Media

During my time at First Baptist I learned a lot about video editing and other media. I also finished up my cert in Digital Media Tech around the same time. I've made many graphics and animations and find them to be very enjoyable.
Video editing and animation is a way I can be creative and artsy. Here's an example of a short animation I made for First Baptist for our summer camp!
